Education 1A “Designing Buildings for Global Trends”

The rationale behind why we need buildings that utilize “nothing” in terms of energy and potable water, produce “nothing” in terms of greenhouse gasses (GHG), and the various steps taken to achieve “nothing”. Through an interactive discussion and visual presentation, participants will be introduced to an open minded approach exploring the big picture of sustainability, focusing on global considerations, local and global trends to building high performance buildings, what has typically gotten in the way of building high-performance buildings and some key ze”R”o strategies (Recognize, Reduce, Remember, Recycle, Renewable, Regenerate, Real costs). We also touch upon the importance of providing superior thermal comfort and indoor air quality to occupants, which is an issue that is increasingly paramount to our culture as we spend over 90% of our time indoors.

Biography

Mr. Albert T. Bicol, PEng, is a LEED® Accredited Professional, and Associate Partner with Cobalt Engineering. Albert Bicol specializes in comfortable, energy efficient building systems design, and in Advanced Thermal Comfort Modeling & Sustainable Design. Testament to his passion and enthusiasm, he recently accepted a Partnership position after just 18 months at Cobalt. Albert has been a speaker at many conferences and seminars around this continent. Utilizing an “out of the box” thought process, Albert champions the use of sustainable and green design concepts in his designs. Albert has extensive expertise in modeling building energy usage, thermal comfort and indoor air quality conditions. He has a wide range of project experience in Canada and the U.S.


Education 1B “How Safe Is The Air You Breath?”
Mr. Greg Baker, CIH, CSP, CHMM

Indoor air quality and mold have become huge areas for litigation in the last decade. Mr. Baker will examine root causes for these litigious construction areas, share valuable experience gained through numerous investigations and evaluations, and use his expertise in presenting remediation solutions for design and construction defects.

Biography

Mr. Greg Baker, CIH, CSP, CHMM,, a Senior Associate with AMEC Earth & Environmental, Inc., has over 19 years of experience in indoor air quality, industrial hygiene, and contaminant remediation design. He is a Diplomat of the Board of Certified Safety Professionals; a Diplomat of the Institute of Hazardous Materials Managers; a Diplomat of the Academy of American Industrial Hygienists; and a member of the American Industrial Hygiene Association. He has served as president of the Pacific Northwest Section of the American Industrial Hygiene Association and was conference chair of the 1998 Northwest Occupational Health Conference. He specializes in the development of contract documents and technical specifications for competitive bidding of remediation projects. He also manages the hazardous materials aspects of complex renovation and demolition projects requiring the remediation of asbestos, lead, chemical residues, and microbial contamination. He is an Oregon State-certified lead inspector and risk assessor; an accredited Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) inspector, an Exterior Design Institute (EDI) - certified moisture analyst and inspector of exterior insulation finish systems (EIFS).

Biography

After graduating from Central Washington University in Ellensburg, with a degree in Public Health Education Danita Hammond took a position with the Lincoln County Health Department as the Public Health Educator. Through her job she speaks to large and small groups on topics ranging from recognizing the hero's in your life, to quitting tobacco and healthy lifestyle changes. Before college, Danita spent a year traveling through Europe living with local families and learning different cultures. This experience gave her new views on world and life. The saying “I am not the same having seen the other side of the world” rings true for her. However she still calls Washington her home, having lived in several different areas of the state, and finds challenge and meaningful focus in balancing work, life and community service. .
